The University of South Carolina women’s golf team started off the 2004 spring season in strong fashion Monday with a third-place finish in the opening round of the 54-hole Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Los Angeles, California. The #29 Gamecocks fired an 18-over-par 302 on the first day of the par 71-5912 yards tournament held at the Palos Verdes Golf club.

The Gamecocks are just three strokes behind second-place New Mexico (299, +15) and 13 strokes behind second-ranked UCLA who shot a 286 (+2) to lead all 15 teams. The Bruins’ Charlotte Mayorkas shot a five-under-par 66 in the opening round to grab the top spot after 18 holes.

South Carolina senior Adrienne Gautreaux is tied for 12th place after the first 18 holes with a three-over-par 74. Junior Tiffany Catafygiotu is only one stroke back with a first day 75 (+4). Playing in her first event of the season, sophomore Erica Battle fired a 76 (+5) Monday to grab a share of 24th place with eight other golfers. Senior Kory Thompson opened with a six-over-par 77 and sits in a tie for 32nd place. Freshman Jenna Pearson shot an 82 (+11) Monday and is tied for 61st place.

On Tuesday, the first USC golfer starts teeing off at 10:25 a.m Pacific Time with last Gamecock off hole number one at 11:05 a.m. South Carolina will be paired with UCLA and New Mexico in tomorrow’s second round.
