Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina’s women’s tennis team took their third straight victory with a 7-0 win against the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga on Monday. The win improved Carolina to 6-2 overall while Chattanooga dropped to 2-6 on the season. The sweep for USC marked their third on the season.

The Gamecocks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on the Mocs by sweeping all three double matches. USC took the battles at number one and three doubles by a score of 8-0 to clinch the doubles point very quickly for the Gamecocks. The tandem of Miranda Gutierrez and Christyn Lucas fought off a late rally by Saskia van Velze and Charlotte Goude to win 9-7.

The Gamecocks swept singles competition for the third time this season. Miranda Gutierrez (13-6) put USC ahead 2-0 after defeating Lucie Barney at No. 3 singles 6-1,6-0. Christyn Lucas (12-7) picked up her third straight win with a 6-0.6-0 win over Cynthia Oulevay to give Carolina a 3-0 edge. The Gamecocks would clinch the match when Magda Wojdylo (10-5) picked up a 6-1,6-0 win over Saskia van Velze at No. 4 singles. Justine Walsh (13-3) remained undefeated on the dual match season after winning No. 6 singles 6-4,6-1. At No. 1 singles, 85th ranked Danielle Wiggins defeated Charlotte Goude 6-0,6-4 to improve her record to 12-6. Junior Fallon Koon (13-5) needed three sets to defeat Bethany Everett at No. 5 singles. Koon took the first set 6-3 but dropped the second set 7-6 before going on to win the third set tiebreaker 1-0(5).

“We are playing better each and every match,” said USC Head Coach Arlo Elkins. “We needed this kind of match to get ready for this weekend’s matches. This weekend is going to be very tough but we are playing very well and I look to see the team keep it up.”

USC returns to action on Friday when they travel to Lexington to face the 21st ranked Kentucky Wildcats. After facing the Wildcats on Friday, Carolina will return home to battle No. 5 Vanderbilt at 1 p.m.
