The University of South Carolina women’s golf team shot a 302, the second-lowest score of Sunday’s final round, to record a seventh-place finish in the 23rd LSU/Cleveland Classic. Senior team captain Adrienne Gautreaux finished second at two-over-par. The Mabank, Texas native fired two even par rounds (218) over the weekend for the best outing of her career.
North Carolina captured the overall team championship with a three-day score of 903. USC finished with a 928, 25 strokes behind the Tar Heels, at the 6,200-yard, par 72 tournament. North Carolina’s Ashley Prange captured the individual title with a one-under par (215) performance over the 54-hole event.
Held at the University Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, six of the 17 teams were from the SEC and will return to the course in April for the 2004 SEC Championship.
“We shot the second lowest round of the day and that was a positive way to finish up this tournament,” said USC head coach Kristi Coggins. “I think we could have finished higher than seventh place but we left some shots behind on the course over the weekend. I’m glad to have the opportunity to play this course now so we’ll be better prepared for the SEC Tournament in April. This weekend’s tournament showed us things that we need to work on so we’ll do better here next time. I’m proud of the way Adrienne Gautreaux played over the weekend. She did everything she could to win today. She was one-under on the last couple of holes and had the chance to win at the end.”
“I’m happy to have finished second but I’ll never be satisfied unless I win,” remarked Gautreaux. “I always look back and find shots that I could have capitalized on. I gave myself every opportunity to win this weekend. If a couple of putts had fallen, it might have been a different story. This LSU University Club course is very scorable and you can really shoot good numbers here. The wind was a bit of a factor but I just kept the ball below the trees. I think that we will be ready to go when we return here for the SEC Tournament in April. We have a great feel for the course and we’ll do well next time.”
South Carolina returns to the links next weekend to host its annual Lady Gamecock Classic at the University Club.
