COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina softball ended its six-game losing streak as they defeated the Kentucky Wildcats 3-2 in game one of the Saturday doubleheader. Stacey Johnson recorded her tenth win of the season as she allowed two runs on three hits and struck out seven in seven innings pitched. Nancy Crane went 3-for-3 with an RBI while Meghan Cornett went 2-for-3 with a run.
USC had a chance to get on the board in the third inning. Amber Curtis drew a one-out walk and stole second before advancing to third on a single by Meghan Cornett. Cornett then stole second to give the Gamecocks runners at third and second but USC could not execute as Kendall struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
USC got it right in the fourth inning when they scored two runs to go up 2-0. Samantha Jennings reached on an error by the shortstop and came home on a double by McKenna Hughes. Hughes then eventually scored on a single by Crane. South Carolina added to its lead in the fifth as Jennings scored Cornett on a two-out RBI-single.
The Wildcats cut USC’s lead to one run in the sixth inning when Rachel Friberg hit her second home run of the season and scored Lori Melchi to make the score 3-2. The home run was the first allowed by Johnson for the year.
Amy Kendall took the loss for Kentucky as she fell to 7-11 on the year. Kendall gave up three runs on nine hits in six innings.
