Columbia, S.C. – Zac McCamie and Harris Honeycutt combined on a three hit shutout and Hank Parks and Brendan Winn hit solo home runs Wednesday night as eighth ranked South Carolina defeated Wofford 3-0 in a non-conference baseball game.
McCamie worked eight innings to claim the win and improve his record to 3-0. He allowed all three Wofford hits, walked two and struck out four. Honeycutt retired Wofford in order in the ninth inning including two strikeouts.
Chris Clark, 1-3, allowed only five hits in 5 1/3 innings but was charged with three runs, two earned, to take the loss. He walked two and struck out three. Austin Redwine pitched 2 2/3 shutout innings and allowed two Gamecock hits. He walked one.
McCamie threw only 99 pitches, 25 of them in the eighth inning when Wofford had two of its three hits. Scott Holloway beat out an infield hit and Anthony Dinardo, who had a perfect night at the plate, singled but both runners were stranded. Dinardo singled in the third inning but was wiped out on a double play. He walked in the sixth.
The game was played in an hour and 53 minutes, South Carolina’s third sub two hour nine inning game of the season. It marked the second consecutive shutout by the Gamecocks. Carolina defeated Alabama 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
South Carolina improved to 30-11 on the season. Wofford dropped to 15-21. South Carolina completes an eight game home stand this weekend with a three game Southeastern Conference series against Mississippi. Game times are 7 p.m., 4 p. m, and 12:30 p. m. The Sunday start is an hour earlier than usual to accommodate Mississippi’s travel plans.
South Carolina took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first inning. Michael Campbell reached on a two base, one out error, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a two out single by Winn. Parks hit his fourth home run of the season in the fifth inning and Winn hit his 12th in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Winn had an eighth inning single for a three for four night and two runs batted in. Parks singled in the second inning before his fifth inning homer. The only other hits by the Gamecocks were a fifth inning double by Tommy King and an eighth inning single by Campbell.
Wofford right fielder Steve Casey was hitless in four at bats to end a 16 game hitting streak.
