COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 10 University of South Carolina men’s soccer team won its fourth straight match on Sunday afternoon, shutting out archrival Clemson, 1-0, in front of a crowd of 4,312 at Stone Stadium in Columbia. Junior forward Ryan Deter scored the game winner as the Gamecocks ran their win streak to four straight and improved to 8-1-1 on the season. The Tigers, who were receiving votes in this week’s national polls, fell to 6-4-0.

“It was a typical South Carolina-Clemson game,” Carolina head coach Mark Berson said. “In the last decade, this is how they have gone. Usually they are one-goal games, or come down to capitalizing on the other team’s mistakes. I’m very proud of our team. They fought hard for 90 minutes and wouldn’t take no for an answer.”

Deter netted his third goal of the season in the 24th minute of play. After a booming punt by South Carolina goalkeeper Brad Guzan, Detter took possession of the ball. On the run, the Raleigh, N.C., native fired a shot from 20 yards out past Clemson goalkeeper Phil Marfuggi and into the back of the net.

“The ball bounced off one of their players, and I knew I had the shot, so I took it,” Deter said of the goal. “It felt great to win this one. This is my third year to play in this rivalry, and to score the winning goal was awesome.”

Clemson nearly took the lead just six minutes to the match. The Tigers’ Steven Rhyne caught Guzan off his line and launched a shot. Guzan was able to the deflected ball off the cross bar and straight down, never letting it cross the line.

Guzan turned in a terrific performance between the posts for South Carolina, recording seven total saves, including four crucial stops in the second half.

“Brad is an exceptional player. I’ve also got to give credit to our defense. Players like Greg Reece and Ryan Leeton did a great job in the back,” Berson said.

Marfuggi finished with two saves for Clemson. The Tigers edged South Carolina in the shot category, 15-12. Charlie Roberts and Mark Buchholz led Clemson with three shots apiece. Michael Samburksy paced the Gamecocks with five attempts.

Berson picked up career win No. 375 against Clemson. His career record now stands at 375-135-43 in 28 seasons. In 27 years at South Carolina, he is 364-130-43.

Today’s crowd of 4,312 was the 15th-largest in Stone Stadium history.

South Carolina also improved to 5-0 in home matches this season with today’s victory over the Tigers, and earned its first victory over the Tigers since 1995. Clemson had controlled the series in the last eight meetings, other than a 0-0 tie on Oct. 8, 2000.

In a very physical match that featured 40 fouls, two Carolina players left with injuries, freshman back Ramon Paracat (ankle) and sophomore forward Ayo Akinsete (hamstring).

South Carolina hosts Charlotte on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Stone Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
