Coaches’ Quotes, South Carolina vs. Arkansas Feb. 2, 2005 The Colonial Center, Columbia, SC

Dave Odom, South Carolina — “It was a workmanlike effort. A good win for us; a key win for us. We played the kind of game we needed to play to beat Arkansas. We didn’t press that much because we thought that would play into Arkansas’ hands. I liked the pace of the game. I thought the game turned near the end of the first half. I think we went on a 21-4 run to close things out. I challenged Tarence Kinsey one-on-one tonight. I told him he would be playing against one of the better players in the league in Ronnie Brewer. Tarence did a good job of keeping Brewer off the glass. He only got three rebounds. Arkansas has the best young team in our league. They didn’t play particularly well tonight, but I think they will be a team to be reckoned with the second half of the SEC season.”

Stan Heath, Arkansas — “We played very poorly tonight, and that’s not to take anything away from South Carolina. It was a very important game for them, and they did what they needed to do to win. I saw it coming (to us). After the Kentucky game, we’ve been flat. We tried a lot of things to snap out of it, but it didn’t work. We started missing a lot of shots, and that had an effect on us. We had some breakdowns defensively. We had a bad stretch in the first half, and it carried over into the second half.”

South Carolina mixed things up with some zone and trapping. We didn’t turn it over a lot, but we weren’t as aggressive as we needed to be. Our team needs to get easy baskets, and we didn’t get easy baskets in transition tonight. We’re a young team, but that’s not an excuse. We have to learn to play games on the road. When you’re in your own building, you get some of that energy with your crowd and people behind you. “
