COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina softball suffered its first doubleheader sweep of the season Tuesday night as the Gamecocks lost 3-0 in game two to Virginia Tech. USC managed only two hits and had nine strikeouts against Tech starter Angela Tincher (2-1). Darcy Norem and Chrissy Schoonmaker accounted for USC’s two hits while Jessica Barnes (3-1) suffered her first loss of the year.
It was a pitching battle in the beginning and the game was scoreless until the fifth when Sarah Prosise was able to score on an infield Gamecock error. Prosise led off the inning with a single and moved around the bases on a passed ball and a sacrifice.
The Gamecocks hits came in the third and fifth innings and USC never could get more than one base runner on at a time. With the bunt single by Norem, neither of the hits earned extra bases.
Virginia Tech added to its lead in the sixth when Stephanie Savre homered to centerfield with a runner on and gave the Hokies a 3-0 lead. That would be enough for Tincher as she retired USC’s next six batters to end the game and clinched the sweep. The home run was the first given up by Barnes this season, second on the day and overall for USC.
In the seventh, the Gamecocks recorded two strikeouts and a pop up to dash any hopes of rallying.
For the Hokies, Savre went 1-for-4 and had two RBI. No players recorded multiple hits.
USC travels to Tallahassee, Fla. this weekend for the Sunshine Tournament Feb. 18-20.
