Baton Rouge, La. – The University of South Carolina women’s tennis team dropped its first loss of the season to LSU on Sunday in Baton Rouge by a score of 4-3. The loss dropped the Gamecocks to 6-1, and it evened their record in the SEC to 1-1. The win improved the Tigers to 7-3 and to 1-1 in conference play. The loss to LSU was the first for the Gamecocks since 1985 and Carolina had won 14 in a row against the Tigers.

The Gamecocks dropped their second consecutive doubles point and the fourth overall this season to LSU. The Gamecocks dropped the matches in doubles at the top two spots but Miranda Gutierrez and Fallon Koon prevented the Tiger sweep by taking an 8-4 win at three.

Down 1-0 entering singles, the Gamecocks would need four single victory to get the win. Camila Caliari extended the LSU lead to 2-0 with a two set victory over Justine Walsh at six. Magda Wojdylo victory at No. 5 gave USC their first point of the day. Wojdylo’s victory was a three setter against Tiffany Tucker where she dropped the first set but took the final two to get the victory. LSU then got their third point from Marina Chiarelli when she defeated USC’s Miranda Gutierrez in straight sets at four. Danielle Wiggins cut the lead by to one by winning at No. 1 singles with a 6-0,7-5 victory over Amanda Mang but the Gamecocks needed the final two matches to clinch the dual match.

With the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches left on the court USC only managed to get one of the two as Christyn Lucas won at two singles. Lucas battled back after dropping the first set 6-1 to take the final two sets 7-5, and 6-0 over Lauren Seaman. Laura Ganzer dropped the match to Staten Spencer in three sets. Ganzer took the first set 6-4 but Spencer rallied back to take the final two stanza’s 6-4 and 6-1 to clinch the victory at three and the overall dual match for LSU.

USC returns to action on Tuesday when they host No. 24 BYU at home at noon.
