Fayetteville, Ark. – Freshman Lisa Longo scored two of USC’s three runs and went 2-for-4 with a home run as the Gamecock softball team defeated the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks 3-0 in the second game of the Tuesday twinbill. Kate Pouliot recorded her first career shutout and her third complete game of the season. USC swept the doubleheader to claim the series. Game three will be Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. (EST).
Longo’s home run in the second inning put the Gamecocks up 1-0 and it marked her second career home run. USC’s second run of the game came in the third inning when Meghan Cornett hit her second long ball of the season, 16th of her career. The home run now ranks her fourth among USC’s all-time career home run leaders.
The Gamecocks third and final run of the game came in the fourth inning when USC had the bases loaded with two outs and an illegal pitch by reliever Kelly Ninemire gave Longo the go ahead to score.
Pouliot got in a jam in the fourth as Arkansas had runners at second and third with two outs but BJ Southmayd flied out to left field to end the inning and the Gamecocks preserved Pouliot’s shutout.
USC recorded the three runs on six hits against the Lady `Backs. Pouliot gave up only five hits, a season low and struck out four batters.
