Columbia, S.C. – University of South Carolina pitcher Arik Hempy was drafted in the 31st round by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft as the 933rd pick overall. Hempy, a sophomore left-hander, went 2-1 with six starts in 11 appearances with a 2.63 ERA in 2005.

Hempy enrolled at Carolina in the fall of 2003 and made an immediate impact as a freshman. He appeared in 25 games with four starts pitching a total of 52 1/3 innings with a 3-1 record, one save, 3.27 ERA, 49 strikeouts, and 14 walks. He pitched a complete game four hit shutout on May 2, 2004 to defeat Mississippi 3-0. The other two wins were in relief, both over SEC rival Florida.

Hempy came to USC from Garner Senior High School in Raleigh, N.C.
