COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s tennis team kept its perfect record intact on Saturday, sweeping Charlotte and Davidson in Columbia. The 12th-ranked Gamecocks (6-0, 0-0 SEC) defeated the 49ers, 6-1, before shutting out the Wildcats, 7-0, in the second half of their final doubleheader of the year. Sophomore Jaime Cuellar led the way for Carolina, picking up a win in his first career match at No. 1 singles, and sweeping a pair of doubles matches with his partner, senior Tom Eklund. The Gamecocks have little time to rest before returning to the courts on Monday, Feb. 13, for a 2 p.m. match against border rival North Carolina at the USC Indoor Facility in Columbia.

No. 12 South Carolina 6, Charlotte 1

USC made quick work of the 49ers in the morning match, dropping just three sets on the way to the win. Eklund and Cuellar clinched the doubles point with their win at No. 1 doubles, defeating Charlotte’s Ryan Johnson and Stuart Lynas, 8-3. The Gamecocks eased through the top four singles matches, with seniors Geraldo Knorr and Eklund taking straight set wins in less than an hour at Nos. 3 and 2 singles, respectively. Sophomore transfer Yevgeny Supeko followed that up with his first match-clinching win as a Gamecock, defeating senior Zvi Lantsberg, 6-3, 6-2, to seal the Carolina victory. Cuellar then picked up a straight set, 6-4, 6-0, win over Roy Sichel in his first career start at the top singles spot for USC. The Gamecocks’ final point would come at No. 5 singles, where senior Adam Adler edged Jonathan Vencatachellum, 6-3, 7-6 (2).

The Gamecocks moved their record to 6-0 with a 7-0 victory over Davidson College in the afternoon match. The Gamecocks claimed the doubles point quickly as Cuellar and Eklund earned their second doubles victory of the day, 8-2, over the Wildcats’ John Bolton and Ethan Jaffee, and Geraldo Knorr and Yevgeny Supeko clinched for Carolina with an 8-3 decision over Daniel Bermeo and Flaviu Simihaian, 8-3. Thomas Stoddard and Joseph Veeder teamed for an 8-6 win over Joe Cheaney and Phillip Compeau at the No. 3 spot to make a Gamecock sweep.

In singles action, Knorr was first to close out his match, defeating Compeau, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. Supeko’s 6-3, 6-4, win put Carolina on top 3-0 and Eklund’s 6-2, 6-4, victory over Simihaian clinched the match for the Gamecocks. USC’s Thomas Stoddard downed Scott Meyers, 6-3, 7-6 (3), at sixth slot before Adam Adler secured the sweep by pulling out a 6-3, 6-7 (3), 1-0 (10) win over the Bolton at No. 5.
