The schedule for the Gamecock Invitational has been changed due to the threat of inclement weather. The tournament will now begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 with N.C. State vs. Georgia Southern. South Carolina will take to the field at 11 a.m. against Fordham and again at 3 p.m. against N.C. State. Sunday’s action will pit USC against Georgia Southern at Noon. Championship play is now scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday is “Kids Day” and all children under 18 get in for $1 with a paid adult. Sunday is “Women’s Basketball Ticket Stub Day” and all fans that bring their ticket stub from the women’s basketball game vs. Mississippi State will get in for $1 admission.
The Gamecocks are 8-4 and are hoping to add on in the win column this weekend. USC is coming off of a midweek win over Charlotte and a 2-2 weekend at the Seminole Classic. This marks the first meeting between N.C. State (8-4) as well as the first meeting between Fordham (0-3). Against Georgia Southern (5-9), USC is 39-0.
The Wolfpack have won their last 7 of 8 games, including a 6-0 shutout victory over No. 18 Missouri. In those last nine games, N.C. State’s single loss was to No. 1 Arizona, ranked No. 3 at the time of the game. Georgia Southern is coming off of a doubleheader sweep against Georgia State after going 2-4 at their home tournament. Fordham has seen action in only three games and has yet to record a win but their losses came to No. 5 Texas and No. 9 Texas A&M.
Lisa Longo leads the Gamecocks’ at the plate. Longo is hitting .419 and leads the team with 13 hits, while Ashton Payne is the Gamecocks’ lead scorer and has crossed the plate 10 times for USC. In the circle, Christie Hamilton is 5-2 with a 1.03 ERA, and Melanie Henkes is 2-0 with 0.00 ERA in 13 innings pitched. On the season, Hamilton has 43 strikeouts in 40.2 innings pitched.
