ATHENS, Ga. – South Carolina equestrian suffered a disappointing loss Saturday as the Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Gamecocks 1246-1231. USC took victories in equitation and reining but it was not enough to capture the overall win. Senior Tara Brothers was the only Gamecock to win both of her competitions.
“It was a disappointing loss for us, but as a whole, the team rode well and the scores were close, it just wasn’t enough,” said head coach Boo Duncan. “We just didn’t have enough in over fences and horsemanship to come out on top. UGA is a strong team and we look forward to seeing them at the SEC Championships in April.”
UGA won the English division 669-664. USC defeated the Bulldogs by three points, 329-326 in equitation but UGA won over fences 343-335. USC picked up five wins in the two categories. Brothers defeated Megan Richardson 85-84 in over fences and Michelle Blair 82-76 in equitation. Kristen Terebesi defeated Rachel Bekowitz 84-75 and to round out equitation, Kelley Campbell defeated Kelly Bonau 81-77 while Sarah Lowe won 83-80 over Logan Fiorentino.
On the western side, USC lost by ten points overall, 577-567. The Gamecocks fell in horsemanship 308.5-294.5 but won in reining, 272.5-268.5. In horsemanship, Allison Bradley defeated Catherine Pennington 76-70.5 and Cortney Borton tied Dana Kennedy 75-75. In reining, the Gamecocks made a strong comeback with a tie and two wins, but it wasn’t enough to propel USC into the lead. Katie Biffle tied Carly Veldman 71-71, while Rachel Sternoff won by default 66-0 to the DQ of Anna Hichborn. Laura Pipkin was USC’s third winner as she defeated Megan Darby 63-58.
