COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina (11-5) got an RBI single in the sixth inning by shortstop Christie Hamilton to lift the Gamecocks past the Campbell Camels (10-5) 3-2 in game one of the Tuesday doubleheader. Hamilton, drove in SEC Freshman of the Week selection, Ashton Payne for the winning run. Payne went 1-for-2 and scored two runs for the Gamecocks. Senior Melanie Henkes (3-0) recorded the win and sophomore Kate Pouliot picked up her second save of the year.

The Gamecocks scored in the first inning on an RBI single by Hamilton allowing Jessica Josker to score and give USC the 1-0 lead. Hamilton drove in two of South Carolina’s three runs as she went 2-for-3 in the game.

The Garnet and Black scored again in the third inning when Josker drove in Payne with a single up the middle and took a 2-0 lead.

The Camels refused to quit as they scored two runs in the fifth to tie the game 2-2. Campbell took advantage of Gamecock mistakes as Lindsey Landry scored on an error by Becky Martinez. In the next play, Jessica Huffman was at third when the Gamecocks caught Holly Harris in a rundown but Harris returned to first safely and Huffman ran home to score. USC got out of the inning in the next at bat when Ashley Jones popped out.

USC set up the winning run in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back hits by Payne and Josker to lead off the inning. Payne eventually moved into scoring position and came home on the single by Hamilton.

Kate Pouliot entered the circle for the Gamecocks in the seventh after Henkes walked the leadoff batter. Pouliot recorded two strikeouts and had a foul out to pick up the save and preserved the Gamecocks’ lead.

USC recorded its three runs on seven hits off of Lauren Caviness (6-3). The Camels recorded its two runs on five hits off of Henkes.
