Fayetteville, Ark. – South Carolina freshman Kettiany ‘KeKe’ Clarke must be anxious to show the SEC – considered the top track conference in the country – she belongs. During the first day of competition at the SEC Outdoor Championships Clarke isn’t far off, sitting just eight points out of the lead of the two-day heptathlon competition at University of Arkansas.

Clarke has 3232 points and is just eight points behind SEC leader Marissa Harris of Mississippi State (3240 points) after the first day.

“KeKe had a very good day and has put herself into position to win, but there is day two and the war continues. She ran a very solid hurdles race, PRed in the high jump and has been solid all day,” said USC Assistant Head Coach Delethea Quarles (multi coach). “We had a solid day with Greg, nothing extraordinary, but really solid. I hate that happened to Curt (being DQed in the 400m). We will regroup and come out and fight tomorrow.”

Spring Valley’s Greg Royster, a senior at Carolina, is in fifth place of the decathlon with 3413 points. Curt McGill is in 10th place of the decathlon with 2791 points. McGill was in fourth place going into 400m, but was DQed (USC has filed a protest).

Joining Clarke on the women’s side of the heptathlon, Renna Townsend is in eighth place with 2968 points and Chelsea Kaczmarek is in 11th place with 2543 points.
