COLUMBIA, S.C.–Soccer America has selected University of South Carolina goalkeeper Mike Gustavson to its preseason All-America team, the magazine announced on Monday. Gutsavson, a native of Aiken, S.C., is one of three goalkeepers on the 22-player team.
Gustavson competed with the United States U-20 national team in Canada and Northern Ireland this summer. He is the reigning Conference USA Freshman of Year, and made the all-Conference USA second team in 2005. He played every minute (1,970:54) in goal for the Gamecocks last season and registered a 1.19 goals-against average. Gustavson also set at USC freshman record with 88 saves, and his 0.98 goals-against average in conference play ranked second among league netminders.
South Carolina opens the 2006 season against Clemson on Friday, Aug. 25, in Columbia. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Stone Stadium on the USC campus.
