COLUMBIA, S.C. –
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced its 2005-06 Academic Scholar Athlete Teams and the South Carolina softball team landed its highest ranking ever with a fifth-place finish. The Gamecocks recorded an overall team GPA of 3.463 and was first among all SEC schools.

The University of Florida was the next conference school ranked No. 16 with a 3.350 GPA. There were six total SEC schools named to the list. Topping the list was St. Bonaventure with a GPA of 3.590, followed by Drake (3.510), Lehigh (3.493) and Detroit-Mercy (3.481). Coastal Carolina placed sixth with a 3.457 average.

Among all of USC’s 2005-06 teams, the softball program finished second behind women’s golf (3.677).
