Columbia, SC – South Carolina Cross Country will be competing in Baton Rouge, La. on October 28th for the 2006 Southeastern Conference Championships. The women’s 6K race will begin at 10 a.m. ET, followed by the men’s 8K race at 11 a.m ET.

The Gamecocks, who were idle last week, will look for Casey Gale, Karen Wigal and Rebecca Chain to pace them in the event to be held at Highland Road Park.

“We had two good practices last week with two had runs on Tuesday and Friday,” Coach Stan Rosenthal said. “This week we’ve practiced pretty well. We’ve had a lot of winds so we haven’t been hitting all the time’s we’ve been aiming for, but we’re as ready as we’ll ever be. The team just had one hard workout Monday and has been resting up so they’re fresh.”

Hosted by LSU, the SEC Championships will be the first 6K race run by the Gamecocks this season. The previous six races have all been 5K races.

The Gamecocks finished 11th last season at the SEC Championships, which were held in Columbia. Tennessee is the defending women’s champion.

A recap of the 2006 SEC Championships will be shown as part of SEC-TV’s weekly show Thursday at 6:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Net.
