TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Memphis Tigers scored three runs in the first inning to beat South Carolina 3-1 Friday and snap the Gamecocks’ win streak at seven games. Despite their best start since 2004, the loss drops USC to 7-1 on the season. Memphis improved to 5-3. Both teams are 1-1 at the tournament. Krystle Robinson (1-1) took the loss and Jenna Kubesch (3-1) earned the win.

Bridgette McNulty recorded an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead in the first, followed by a two-RBI double by Kara Ross to provide all of the runs the Tigers would need to pick up the victory.

South Carolina was unable to produce any runs until the fifth inning. Jessica Josker doubled with one out and Jacqueline Wetherbee followed with another double to drive home Josker and cut the lead to 3-1, preventing the shutout. However, the rally ended Becky Martinez grounded out into a double play to end the inning. Tori Martin led off the sixth with a double with hopes of sparking another rally, but the Gamecocks’ bats fell silent as Memphis recorded the next six outs in order.

The Gamecocks managed four hits off of Kubesch from Josker, Wetherbee, Martin and McKenna Hughes. Ashton Payne went 0-for-3 at the plate which ended her hitting streak at seven games, the longest of the season.

USC will wrap up play at the FSU Sunshine State Tournament Saturday when they take on Jacksonville at 9:30 a.m. and FSU at 1:30 p.m.
