TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – South Carolina suffered its second loss of the season as they fell 8-3 to No. 22 Florida State in their final game of the FSU Sunshine State Tournament. The Gamecocks went 2-2 at the tourney and are now 8-2 on the year. Melissa Hendon (1-1) took the loss as she gave up six runs on six hits in five innings pitched. McKenna Hughes hit two home runs to provide USC all three runs.
Jacqueline Wetherbee continued to hit for the Gamecocks as she hit two doubles to go 2-for-3. Seminoles pitcher Teresa Gober threw 5.1 innings and allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six to improve to 3-0.
The Seminoles took the 1-0 lead in the second with an RBI triple by Whitney Buckmon. FSU added three more runs in the third after the Gamecocks had two errors in the inning.
LaShaun Davis led off the fifth with a solo home run to extend the lead to 5-0 and Yuruby Alicart followed with a two-out solo home run to make it 6-0. The Gamecocks got out of the inning when Buckmon grounded out to first.
Gober held the Gamecocks hitless for 13 straight batters before USC recorded another hit. In the fifth, the Gamecocks caught a break when Adele Voigt reached base safely with two outs on an error by Michelle Snyder. With the next at bat, McKenna Hughes hit a home run to left field for two runs and cut the score to 6-2 and erased the shutout.
FSU tagged on its final two runs of the game in the seventh. An RBI double by Brittany Krbec made the score 7-2 and the Krbec scored on an error by South Carolina to go up 8-2.
The Gamecocks attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh when Hughes hit her second home run of the game with two outs and made the score 8-3. The rally would end there as Hendon lined out to the pitcher for the final out of the game.
South Carolina will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 22 when they travel to Charleston for a doubleheader with College of Charleston. USC returns home on Feb. 24-25 for the Gamecock Invitational.
