COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina escaped an upset as they slipped past Jacksonville State with a 1-0 victory at the Gamecock Invitational. USC (11-2) was able to take advantage of a JSU error to score the only run of the game. Kate Pouliot (7-0) recorded the win, while Karla Pittman (2-2) took the loss.

The game was scoreless through 5.2 innings before Melissa Hendon singled to keep the inning alive. Whitney Wierzbicki entered the game to pinch run for Hendon. Freshman Lindsay Walker followed with a single to short, but then the ball was overthrown, opening the gate for Wierzbicki to score. The lone run gave South Carolina the 1-0 lead, all it would need for the eventual win.

Pouliot, who entered the game in the sixth, faced five batters in 1.2 innings to pick up the win. She gave up one hit and struck out three. Hendon started the game and pitched 5.1 innings. She gave up four hits and struck out 11, marking her fourth 10-plus strikeout game of the season, second in a row.

Recording hits for South Carolina was Ashton Payne, Adele Voigt, McKenna Hughes and Tori Martin. Walker was the only Carolina to record multiple hits as she went 2-for-3.
