Columbia, S.C. – Mike Cisco allowed just one run in 6.2 innings of work and struck out nine batters to pick up his first win of the year as South Carolina defeated Eastern Michigan 5-1 to sweep a doubleheader and the weekend series vs. Eastern Michigan. The Gamecocks improve to 8-1 on the year while the loss drops the Eagles to 1-6 this season. Carolina returns to action next Saturday, Mar. 3 with a home and home series vs. the Clemson Tigers.
Cisco was effective throughout the second game of the doubleheader limiting the Eagles to just five hits and walking only one batter. Curtis Johnson relieved Cisco and worked 0.2 innings with Wynn Pelzer closing the game out with 1.2 scoreless innings of work. Cisco, Johnson and Pelzer combined to strike out 14 batters in the game, a season high total for the Gamecocks.
Carolina broke open the scoring in the second inning with four runs off EMU starter Matt Shoemaker. Phil Disher, the hero in game one of the doubleheader, picked up where he left off with a single and advanced to second on a one-out single from Jon Willard. Both players would then score on a RBI base hit courtesy of Travis Jones. Jones and James Darnell would score and increase the Carolina lead to 4-0 off a RBI base hit from Cheyne Hurst.
Both teams would trade runs in the fifth inning as Jeff Hehr hit a sacrifice fly RBI to score Brian Blackburn. The Gamecocks would get theirs in the bottom half as Justin Smoak delivered with a solo home run to right center, his second of the season.
Disher, Willard and Jones each had two hits apiece as the Gamecocks totaled nine on the afternoon. Jeff Hehr went 2-for-2 and Blackburn added two hits to lead the Eagles. Shoemaker, the EMU starter, suffered the loss and is 0-1 on the year.
