COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina shortstop Lindsay Walker was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman Player of the Week Monday for her efforts during the week ending Feb. 25. Walker, a native of Fayetteville, Ga., led the team in hitting, posting a .600 average (9-for-15) with five RBI on the week. She helped the Gamecocks to go 5-0 on the week and win a doubleheader sweep against College of Charleston and the Gamecock Invitational.

With a five-game hitting streak, she recorded one of two hits in USC’s 3-1 win over Radford at the Gamecock Invitational, in addition to driving in two of the three runs in the win. Walker also scored the trying run in Carolina’s victory over ETSU. Defensively, she recorded five putouts and 12 assists.

For the season, Walker leads the team with a .378 batting average. She has scored nine runs and has three doubles, one home run and nine RBI.

Walker is the third Gamecock player to earn SEC Freshman of the Week honors. In 2006, Ashton Payne and Jacqueline Wetherbee earned the honors. Jessica Josker earned SEC Player of the Week in 2005, her freshman year, as did Meghan Cornett in 2002, her freshman year.
