COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina (19-3) softball scored two runs in the first to defeat the Coastal Carolina Lady Chanticleers (5-14) 2-1 in game one of a twin bill Wednesday evening. McKenna Hughes had an RBI double and scored on a wild pitch to give the Gamecocks the victory. Melissa Hendon captured the win to improve to 7-1 while Ashley Frederick fell to 2-6.
The Gamecocks used four hits in the first to take a 2-0 lead. Adele Voigt led off with a triple to left field, her first of the season, and Hughes drove in Voigt with an RBI-double for the first run of the game. Hughes then scored on a wild pitch with Melissa Hendon at the plate for the second run.
Coastal broke up the shut out in the fourth inning when Allison Cantrell hit a solo home run to right field and cut the lead to 2-1. The run was the first that Hendon had given up in 24.1 innings pitched.
