KNOXVILLE, TENN. –
The No. 1 Tennessee Lady Vols (30-2, 8-2 SEC) scored one run to defeat the South Carolina Gamecocks (24-9, 3-5 SEC) 1-0 and recorded the series doubleheader sweep Wednesday night. Kate Pouliot (12-3) and the Gamecocks held the Lady Vols to just two hits, a season low for Tennessee, but it wasn’t enough as Tonya Callahan drove in Lindsay Schultzer with a sacrifice fly for the winning run. Megan Rhodes (7-1) recorded the win while Monica Abbott earned her second save of the season.
Adele Voigt recorded the one hit for South Carolina in the first when she hit the ball to left field with one out. South Carolina did not get another base runner until the third when Ashton Payne drew a walk. The Gamecocks were able to get both runners into scoring position but the efforts to score were unsuccessful.
Tennessee scored its lone run of the game in the fourth inning after Pouliot gave up a lead-off walk to Schutzler. The walk would come back to haunt the Gamecocks as Schutzler advanced on a stolen base and a ground out before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Callahan.
With the 1-0 lead, the Lady Vols replaced Rhodes with Monica Abbott in the circle in the sixth inning to help preserve the lead. Abbott pitched two perfect innings and struck out four of the six batters she faced to pick up the save.
Pouliot pitched four perfect innings against the Lady Vols and allowed only two hits, a season low for Tennessee. India Chiles and Shannon Doepking recorded the two hits for Tennessee when they both singled in the third, but UT was unable to score any runs and the Gamecocks were unscathed in the inning.
South Carolina will take some time off this weekend and will return to action on Tuesday, March 27 when they host Winthrop in a midweek doubleheader. The Garnet and Black return to SEC action March 31-April 1 when they travel to Starkville, Miss. for a three-game series with the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
