Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina softball team fell to the Winthrop Eagles 2-0 in the first of two games Tuesday at Beckham Field. The Gamecocks fall to 24-10 on the year, while Winthrop improves to 30-10.
The game remained scoreless until the third when Gamecock pitcher Melissa Hendon issued consecutive base hits and walked the next batter to load the bases. A two-out double off the bat of Winthrop shortstop Stephanie Reid drove in the first two runs of the game. Hendon retired the next batter ending the inning
South Carolina looked to cut the lead in the fifth when Becky Martinez had a one out single and then advanced to second on sacrifice bunt by Hendon, but the Gamecocks failed to execute when Lisa Longo struck out looking to end the threat.
The Gamecocks once again got a runner into scoring position on a double from McKenna Hughes. Winthrop then retired the next three Gamecocks on pop-ups to end the game.
Hendon suffered the loss falling to 10-6, giving up two runs on five hits. Winthrop pitcher Megan Evans picked up the win, striking out seven, and improving to 14-4.
