Box Score

COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Melissa Hendon (12-10) pitched a complete game one-hit shutout to guide the South Carolina Gamecocks (27-15, 5-10) to a 5-0 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs (33-20, 5-10) Saturday. The Gamecocks posted five runs on seven hits off of starter Christie Hamilton (12-11) as McKenna Hughes went 2-for-2 and drove in three runs.

Georgia’s lone hit came early in the game as Melissa Wood hit a one-out single in the first inning but Hendon and the Gamecock defense contained the Bulldogs for the remainder of the game.

The Gamecocks took a 2-0 lead to break up the scoreless game when McKenna Hughes hit a two-RBI single to score Lisa Longo and Ashton Payne. Longo recorded the first hit for the Gamecocks and ended Hamilton’s chance at a no-hitter to lead off the third-inning. The Garnet and Black tacked on another run in the inning on an RBI-single by Lindsay Walker. Walker drove in Adele Voigt who reached on a walk.

South Carolina scored again in the fourth with back-to-back RBI singles by Voigt and Hughes to go up 5-0. Becky Martinez scored and Payne scored her second run of the game, her first multi-run game since Feb. 17 against Jacksonville.

The win snapped a six-game losing streak to the Bulldogs, marking the first victory for South Carolina since 2004. Hughes three RBI now gives her 122 for her career and moves her to fourth on the leader list, passing Michelle Delloso (’88-`91).
