AUBURN, Ala. – South Carolina softball continued to struggle as the Gamecocks suffered its fourth straight shutout in a 1-0 loss to the Auburn Tigers Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Tigers captured the doubleheader sweep and the series win. The Gamecocks fall to 32-20, 10-14 in the SEC, and Auburn improves to 24-30, 9-18 in the SEC.
Anna Thompson (13-15) guided the Tigers to the victory as she pitched both games and recorded 21 strikeouts on the day. Kate Pouliot (14-6) pitched a solid game two but had no offensive support as the Gamecocks scattered three hits in the game. South Carolina recorded a hit in the first inning, but was hitless until the sixth. Pouliot gave up five hits and had five strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Auburn jumped out early just like in game one as Holly Currie hit a two-out RBI-double to drive in Lauren Walton for the lone run. Walton reached on a single to get things started for the Tigers.
The Gamecocks’ best chance to score came in the seventh when Lindsay Walker led off with a single and tried to ignite a rally. With one out, Walker advanced to second due to a sacrifice error by Auburn, and was the only extra-base runner for the Gamecocks in the game. However, the door was closed shut on South Carolina’s chances to tie when Thompson struck out Whitney Wierzbicki and Jacqueline Wetherbee for the final two outs of the game and held onto the win.
The Gamecocks have now been held scoreless for 28.1 innings, a season high, and have been shut out 11 times this season. With four games left in the regular season, South Carolina continues to hold on to a spot in the SEC Tournament.
South Carolina will attempt to snap a four-game losing streak and the three-game sweep to the Auburn Tigers on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. (ET).
