Melissa Hendon recorded her 19th victory of the season with Carolina’s 2-0 win over Oregon. The 19 wins are the most by a Carolina pitcher since Melanie Henkes posted 19 in 2003. Hendon retired 14 of Oregon’s last 15 batters including the final 13.
Ashton Payne in the two games against Oregon is 5 for 7 heading into the third and final meeting. She was 3 for 4 in the first game against Oregon and 2 for 3 in the first championship game.
The win for USC gave Coach Compton her 897th career win at South Carolina.
South Carolina is one of three No. 4 seeds playing in their Regional Championship (Tennessee Tech, Loyola Marymount) and they are also one of seven SEC teams playing for their Regional Championship. The SEC had eight teams in the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
Oregon
Oregon is now 3-1 all-time against South Carolina. The Ducks picked up an 8-4 win over the Gamecocks to advance to Sunday’s Championship game. The lost dropped Carolina to the losers bracket where the Gamecocks eliminated NC State on Saturday night 4-3.
Jennifer Salling is 4 for 8 and 5 RBI in the Columbia Regional heading into the final game.
The complete game thrown by Alicia Cook was her 23rd of the season, which is tied for the 10th most in a single season in Oregon history.
