After giving ninth-ranked Davidson a close battle in their last race, the Gamecocks travel to Charlotte, N.C. to compete in the first annual Charlotte Invitational Friday, Sept. 21 at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Complex. The women’s 5,000-meter race is scheduled to begin at 6:20 p.m.

The Gamecocks will compete against four other teams including 10th ranked Charlotte. South Carolina will face the same type of team as Davidson, as Charlotte looks faster up front, while the Gamecocks have better depth at the #5 through #7 positions.

Head Cross Country Coach Stan Rosenthal expects continued improvement in times from everyone racing.

“The course has more hills and poorer footing, which may cause the race times to be not as fast. However, with another week of training we should be faster, so it will even out. Charlotte crushed us at our home race Aug. 31. We hope to return the favor at their meet,” Rosenthal said.

The Gamecocks are coming off a strong showing last weekend at the Asics-Winthrop Invitational. South Carolina placed five runners in the top-10 finishers to claim a second place finish, its best finish of the season. Senior Rebecca Chain led the Gamecocks for the second consecutive time this season with a fifth place finish. In addition, several more freshman recorded personal bests for 5K cross country and the upper class runners improved their times from the first race of the season.

The Gamecocks will take two weeks off before traveling to Orlando, Fla. on Sat., Oct. 6 to compete in the Disney World Invitational.
