COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina hits the road for its first away Southeastern Conference contests of the year, taking on No. 22 LSU and Mississippi on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Friday’s match starts at 7 p.m. CDT in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the LSU campus, while Sunday’s affair in Oxford will be held at 1:30 p.m. CDT at the Gillom Sports Center.
The Gamecocks saw their four-match winning streak snapped on Friday night against Auburn in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss. The Garnet and Black followed that with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Georgia.
The Bayou Bengals are 10-1 on the season and are one of three teams that swept through the opening week of league action. They stand 22nd in the latest CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll and 13th in the Molten/Volleyball Magazine rankings.
The Rebels come into the weekend with a 11-2 mark, 1-1 in league action and take on No. 6 Florida on Friday night before the Gamecocks roll into town.
All-Time versus LSU: The Gamecocks and Tigers have split the all-time meetings between the programs, 10-10. In matches in Baton Rouge, the Gamecocks hold a 6-5 advantage. The Purple and Gold have caputed five straight meetings in the series dating back to 2003. Carolina’s last win against LSU came on Sept. 26, 2003 in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center
All-Time versus Mississippi: South Carolina holds a 20-7 advantage over the Rebels all-time, but Ole Miss stopped an 18-match Gamecock winning streak with a 3-0 win in Oxford last season. Prior to that loss, the last time that South Carolina dropped a match to Mississippi was in the 1992 SEC Tournament.
Success in SEC Road Lid-Lifters: Since joining the Southeastern Conference in 1991, the Gamecocks have gone 11-5 (.688) in road openers against league competition. However, two of those losses have come consecutively, including a 3-0 loss at LSU last season. The year prior, Arkansas beat South Carolina on Sunday after the LSU Tigers won a neutral-site match after the fallout from Hurricane Katrina forced LSU to the road.
