Senior Rebecca Chain finished fifth to lead the Gamecocks to a second place finish at the Charlotte Invitational Friday.

“The race went well. Everyone raced hard. We knew that Charlotte was a good team. We went out and ran with them, we just didn’t finish with them. It was a good effort,” Head Cross Country Coach Stan Rosenthal said.

The Gamecocks had six runners finish in the top-15. Freshman Ashley Evens finished second for South Carolina with a seventh place finish while junior Casey Gale also finished in the top-10 in 10th place. Junior Callie Rabun finished 11th while freshman Courtney Bowen finished 13th with junior Kelsey Bristol following in 14th.

“Rebecca has been running well this season as well as Ashley. This looked like Callie’s best race of the season,” Rosenthal said.

The Gamecocks finished with 46 points behind Charlotte who claimed the team title with 20 points. Junior Aja Jackson of Charlotte took home the individual victory finishing with a time of 18:33.

The Gamecocks will take two weeks off before traveling to Orlando, Fla. on Sat., Oct. 6 to compete in the Disney World Invitational.
