GREENVILLE, S.C. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team posted five wins in singles and four in doubles on day one of the Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, S.C., on Friday.

Highlighting the day were junior Gira Schofield and sophomore Ana Marija Zubori, who teamed up to defeat the nation’s No. 10-ranked tandem of Caitlin Whoriskey and Zofia Zubor of Tennessee by an 8-3 score in the semifinals of flight one. In their first match, Schofield and Zubori were 9-7 winners against Fanjoy/Grabinski from North Carolina. The Gamecock duo faces second-ranked Federica van Adrichem and Ani Mijacika from Clemson for the championship at 10:15 a.m. Saturday.

Schofield cruised through her singles match versus Leyla Morzan of Penn State 6-2, 6-2 in flight one, while Zubori downed PSU’s Jenny Shular 6-3, 6-3 in flight two. Schofield, who is ranked 36th, takes on No. 21 Mijacika at 1:30 p.m. and No. 77 Zubori squares off with Whoriskey at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

In flight three, Gamecock junior Natasa Vuckovic defeated Chelsea Nusslock from Wisconsin 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the semis where she will face Clemson’s Laurianne Henry at 12:30 p.m. Vuckovic lost her first-round doubles match playing with classmate Suzanna Mansour, but the duo rebounded with a triumph over Osborne/Preeg of Furman 8-6 in the consolation draw.

Mansour needed three sets to win her flight four match with North Carolina’s Sophie Grabinski. After dropping the first set 6-3, Mansour came back to win 7-1 in a second-set tiebreaker before posting a 6-4 victory for the third. She next faces Monica Arguello from Furman in the semifinals.

Freshman Miljana Jocic moved her fall record to 4-0 in flight five thanks to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Ekaterina Mirnova of Wisconsin. Jocic will look to keep her perfect slate in tact against Alex Jurewitz from North Carolina on Saturday.

Senior Megan McGavock lost 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 to Penn State’s Lauren Holzberg in the first round of flight six. McGavock did, however, notch a first-round doubles win over the PSU duo of Dohanics/Holzberg in flight three with Jocic as her partner. The two lost in the next round and take on Betts/Tomory from Furman for third place Saturday.
