EVANSTON, Ill. — Senior Megan McGavock from the South Carolina women’s tennis team won singles flight C at the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston, Ill., on Sunday to cap a 4-0 weekend. She defeated Alexis Conill from Northwestern in the championship match 6-4, 6-4 to move to 9-1 this fall.
The day prior, McGavock first defeated Michigan State’s Michelle Murphy 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and then beat Kirsten Gambrell from DePaul in the semis after Gambrell withdrew because of an injury. McGavock led in the first set 3-0 when her opponent withdrew.
Also on Sunday, junior Suzanna Mansour won her second consecutive consolation match 4-6, 6-4, (10-2) against Barbara Zidek of William & Mary, and freshman Miljana Jocic was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Lindsey Lonergan of Michigan State. On Saturday, Jocic downed Zidek 6-0, 6-0 and Mansour defeated Lonergan 6-4, 6-2.
Mansour and Jocic both fell in the quarters of flight B Saturday, as did junior Natasa Vuckovic. Mansour lost 6-4, 6-2 to Laura van der Stroet of Ole Miss and Jocic dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Minnesota’s Tijana Koprivica. Vuckovic forfeited to Suzie Matzanauer of Northwestern in flight A after coming down with an illness Friday night. She tried to play doubles with Mansour on Saturday morning, but the duo had to forfeit after falling behind 3-0 to Ghazal/Mosolova of Northwestern in flight A.
The Gamecocks will be back in action Oct. 26-28 hosting the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
