COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 23rd-ranked University of South Carolina men’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback to C-USA opponent Tulsa on Saturday at Stone Stadium. Carolina falls to 8-4-0, 2-1-0 Conference USA, while the Golden Hurricane improves to 7-2-2, with a 2-0-2 record in league play.
“I thought our guys played hard and I thought we dominated many aspects of the game,” South Carolina head coach Mark Berson said. “We didn’t get the goal tonight, but this was a good, hard-fought conference game between two good teams. I thought we created enough chances to equalize, but we just weren’t able to cash in on our chances.”
Carolina out-shot Tulsa 11-6, where junior midfielder Spencer Lewis and sophomore midfielder Cory Lewis paced the Gamecocks with three shots each. Senior defender Daniel Upchurch contributed two shots in the loss.
South Carolina freshman goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer allowed one goal, collecting one save, while Tulsa netminder Dominic Cervi tallied six saves in the shutout.
Both teams failed to capitalize on numerous offensive chances in the first half. Following a 0-0 halftime tie, Tulsa’s Eric Burkholder found a deflected shot at his feet in the 54th minute, placing a ball under the out-stretched hands of Maurer for the deciding 1-0 Golden Hurricane advantage.
South Carolina continues C-USA action on the road next Saturday at Memphis. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
