COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team won three singles and two doubles flights Sunday at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Columbia, S.C.
Gira Schofield and Ana Marija Zubori teamed up to win the A-1 doubles flight 8-5 against Stupak/Kovacs of Armstrong Atlantic in the final. Megan McGavock and Miljana Jocic won the B-1 draw 8-4 versus USC-Upstate’s Novo/Miloranovic in the final. In the third-place match of A-2, Natasa Vuckovic and Suzanna Mansour lost 8-3 to Schoones/Kournhof from UT-Martin.
In an all-USC final for singles flight A-1, Schofield recovered from a 6-0 first-set loss to Zubori to win 6-3, 6-3 in sets two and three. Prior to the match, Schofield defeated Yevgeniya Stupak from East Tennessee State 6-2, 6-2, and Zubori was a 6-2, 6-2 winner as well against College of Charleston’s Laura Borza in the semifinals.
Vuckovic had little trouble in her semifinal win in flight A-2, a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Holly Johnson of Virginia Tech. Vuckovic lost the first set 6-4 to Armstrong Atlantic’s Alida Muller-Wehler in the championship match but battled to a 7-6(5) win in the second. After going up 4-0 in the third, Vuckovic held on to win 6-4.
Jocic cruised in her two matches in flight B-2, winning both by 6-1, 6-1 scores against Allison Rauh and Trisha Wang of Davidson.
McGavock and Mansour both won their consolation matches. McGavock recorded a 6-1, 6-0 triumph against Kim Webb from Charleston Southern, while Mansour handled Natalie Prinz from West Virginia 6-0, 6-3.
The Gamecocks conclude their fall season at the SEC Fall Coaches Classic in Auburn, Ala., over Nov. 1-4.
