South Carolina (2-0), playing its 100th season of Gamecock basketball, hosts Southern California at 7:30 pm on Sat., Nov. 17 at the Colonial Center. Southern California (0-1) is slated play at The Citadel on Thurs., Nov. 15. Behind the Bears’ James Florence 30 points then-No. 18 Southern California dropped its home opener to Mercer, 96-81 on Sat., Nov. 11 Fantastic freshman OJ Mayo scored 32 points in his debut, but had eight turnovers.

Good seats for the 7:30 pm contest remain.

South Carolina is 2-0 vs. Southern California, ruining the debut of their $150 million arena, The Galen Center, with an 80-74 overtime win over the Trojans on Nov. 16, 2006. South Carolina also defeated Southern California 65-58 in overtime on Dec. 22, 1977 in Columbia. South Carolina is 2-4 vs. the Pac-10 all-time, playing Arizona State (0-1), California (1-0), Southern California (2-0), Stanford (0-1) and UCLA (0-1).

The Southern California game can be seen on CSS with Mike Morgan and Wimp Sanderson making the call. It can be heard on the Gamecock Radio Network with Brad Muller (play-by-play) and Casey Manning (color analyst). In addition, it can be picked up via the internet at www.gamecocksonline.com.

Gamecocks Celebrate 100 Years of Basketball

During the 2007-08 season selected “Gamecock Greats” will be recognized at every home game (see first page for SCSU and The Citadel Gamecock Greats). Fans will have an opportunity to vote on an All-Decade team and an All-Century team.

The year-long celebration will culminate Feb. 22-23 with a very special weekend celebration that will create new memories. In addition to USC’s game against Mississippi State on Sat., Feb. 23, the weekend will feature a former players reunion, an alumni game, an autograph session and a lettermen’s banquet with great food and old stories that will stir the hearts of everyone.

South Carolina taps The Citadel

South Carolina defeated The Citadel 103-42 on Monday night. The following are a few of the night’s highlights.

+ Sam Muldrow made his first career start.

+ Devan Downey’s 11 assists tied the Colonial Center record. Cliff Hawkins, University of Kentucky, recorded 11 assists on March 3, 2004 against the Gamecocks. The 11 assists also tied Downey’s career high that he recorded against North Carolina A&T on December 30, 2005.

+ Downey also recorded a career high with 9 rebounds. His previous high was 7 vs. Tennessee Tech on December 17, 2005. The 6 steals was also a new career high. His previous career high came against Marquette on January 7, 2006.

+ Downey became the first Gamecock guard to record a double-double since Chuck Eidson collected the school’s only triple-double in the 82-65 win over South Carolina State, posting 25 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in only the second game of the Colonial Center. One game prior to that, Eidson missed his first triple-double by one assist when he collected 19 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists in USC’s 71-66 win over ETSU which opened the Colonial Center.

+ The 103 points scored by South Carolina marked the first time that the Gamecocks scored 90+ points in consecutive games since December 21, 1995 against the Citadel (112-61) and December 30 against Radford (90-69).

+ The 103 points broke the Colonial Center record which was held by Vanderbilt who recorded 99 on March 3, 2007 against the Gamecocks. The 103 points is also the first time for the Gamecocks scoring 100+ since scoring 100 against Furman on December 30, 1996.

+ The 61 point win is tied for the third largest win in Carolina history. The Gamecocks defeated the 402nd Signal Batallion 68-7 (61) on Jan. 19, 1918. The largest Gamecock victory was 84-9 (75) against Presbyterian College on January 4, 1934 in Columbia and the second largest victory was against the Florence Stars, 80-14 (66) on January 2, 1948.

+ The Citadel is the first team that South Carolina held under 50 points since allowing Florida to score 49 in the 2006 SEC Tournament Championship game on March 12, 2006.

Mr. Basketball

Wondering where all of South Carolina’s Mr. Basketball’s are playing college ball? Look no further than the University of South Carolina. Zam Fredrick was Mr. Basketball in 2004, Devan Downey was Mr. Basketball in 2005 and Mike Holmes was Mr. Basketball in 2007. Mr. Basketball 2003, Brandon Wallace (at USC from 2003-07), broke USC’s career blocks record and games played record before moving onto the NBA’s Boston Celtics this year.

Diaper Dandies

The Gamecocks started three sophomores, a freshman and a senior in the exhibition game on Monday and again on Friday vs. SCSU. Monday one freshman, Sam Muldrow, started in place of another, Mike Holmes, with three sophomores and a junior also starting.

Carolina started at least two freshmen in 21 of 30 games last season. USC started three freshman against No. 25 Kentucky on Jan. 16, 2007 in Columbia.
