BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Twelve men’s soccer student-athletes were named to the 2007 Conference USA All-Academic Team, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday. South Carolina senior forward Daniel Upchurch and sophomore midfielder Cory Lewis were each selected to the squad. The all-academic team consists of 12 student-athletes that have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a starter or key reserve for their respective team.

SMU led the selections with three members on the team, while Memphis and South Carolina both placed two on the all-academic team. Eight schools total were represented.

Upchurch has seen action in 12 games this season as a reserve for the Gamecocks, contributing one assist and eight shots as a forward. An engineering major, Upchurch has made the President’s List (4.0 GPA) three times and the Dean’s List twice in six completed semesters at South Carolina. He won the team’s Academic Award for the sophomore class in 2005, while he has also made the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll (2005, 06), earned the Commissioner’s Academic Medal (3.75 GPA or higher; 2005, 06) and earned fall SEC All-Academic honors (2004, 05, 06) during his career.

Lewis, a member of the South Carolina Honors College and a Cooper Scholar at USC, has made 14 appearances for the Gamecocks this season, attempting five shots on goal at the midfield position. He also helped the Carolina defense to six shutouts during the regular season. Lewis was named to the 2006-07 Conference USA Honor Roll last year as a freshman.

South Carolina will face Memphis, tonight at 6:30 p.m. ET in the opening round of the Conference USA Championship, held on the campus of UAB in Birmingham.
