COLUMBIA, S.C. — University of South Carolina women’s tennis coach Arlo Elkins announced the signing of Ashley Miller to a National Letter of Intent on Thursday. A native of Montgomery, N.Y., Miller will join the Gamecocks in fall 2008.

“She was the one recruit we were after all year and we look forward to her being a part of the team when she gets here,” Elkins said. “She plays a big game and her potential is really on the upside.”

Miller recently finished her senior year of high school tennis at Valley Central with a 24-1 record. She won the state public high school girls’ singles title at Eastside Racquet Club in Manlius, N.Y., this month before suffering her lone setback on the season in the state federation girls’ high school singles final. Miller also won her fourth consecutive Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association and Section 9 championships along the way. She finished fifth at the state championships in 2006 and was fourth as a sophomore.

In the latest United States Tennis Association Eastern Section rankings, Miller is No. 16 in the Girls’ 18 Singles division. Miller finished sixth in 2006 in the Girls’ 16 Singles for the Eastern Section and she was 26th in the national rankings as well. During 2005, she earned a final ranking of third in the 14s for her section and was 98th nationally.
