COLUMBIA, S.C. – Add another milestone to Joyce Compton’s tally, as she picked up her 900th win at South Carolina with a 3-0 triumph over Western Carolina. The Gamecocks move to 2-4 on the season, while the Catamounts are now 0-1.

A quartet of Gamecocks had two hits on the day, led by freshman Laura Mendes. The centerfielder had an RBI double in the third and a run-scoring single in the fourth. Senior second baseman Lisa Longo went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Senior Jessica Josker and freshman Jill Semento also had two hits on the afternoon.

South Carolina took a 2-0 lead in the second behind the Mendes double and a Semento RBI single. Longo led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice ahead of Mendes’ smash. Mendes later scored on the Semento single after advancing to third on an illegal pitch.

The Garnet and Black tacked on another run in the fourth when South Carolina strung together four straight hits with two outs. Longo lined a double down the left field line and was followed by a Becky Martinez single. Mendes plated Longo with a single, while Josker followed with another base knock. But the Catamounts ended the threat when relief pitcher Lauren Ross struck out Semento.

Carolina got a good performance out of starting pitcher Kate Pouliot (2-1). The senior scattered four hits and a walk in her five innings while striking out seven for her second win of the year. Redshirt freshman Krystle Robinson picked up her first career save with a dominating performance, striking out five of the seven Catamounts she faced. Michelle Tatitng (0-1) went 3 2/3 innings and gave up eight hits, three earned runs and three walks.

The Gamecocks head west to Las Vegas for the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic, held this Friday thru Sunday on the UNLV campus. Carolina opens with an 11:15 a.m. (MST) contest against No. 10/6 UCLA. They will also face Cal Poly, No. 9 Oklahoma, Oregon and Cal State Northridge during the weekend’s action.
