LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Gamecock sophomore left fielder Cagney Davis had a career day at the plate, knocking two doubles and recording three RBI in South Carolina’s 8-3 victory over defending Big West champion Cal Poly at Eller Media Stadium in the 2008 UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. The win moves Carolina to a 3-5 record, while the loss drops the Mustangs to 2-4.

Davis brought home the Garnet and Black’s first runs of the day when she doubled to center field to score Jill Semento and Becky Martinez. A Lisa Longo double plated junior first baseman Jacqueline Wetherbee and Davis to give the Gamecocks a 4-0 lead.

The Mustangs got one back in the bottom half of the second when Krysten Cary scored on Stephanie Correia’s single up the middle.

Carolina put up another four spot in the third, as 10 Gamecocks went to the plate. Wetherbee’s single sent senior Jessica Josker home. Davis’s double down the right field line drove in Semento, while pinch hitter Cassie Gogreve got her first career hit at Carolina with an RBI single that scored Wetherbee. Ashton Payne’s single through the right side drove in Davis to cap Carolina’s scoring.

Cal Poly did not quit, however, scoring two in the bottom half of the frame. Sarah Iwata came in after Longo’s throw from short on a Anna Cahn grounder hit her in the back and rolled into the Mustang dugout. Later in the inning, Stephanie Tam came home on a second Longo error.

The Mustangs threatened in the fourth, fifth and sixth, getting two runners aboard in each inning, but redshirt freshmane Krystle Robinson and senior Kate Pouliot were able to get out of the jams unscathed.

Robinson (1-1) pitched 5.1 innings and scattered seven hits and three runs, one earned, while walking three and striking out three. Cahn (0-2) went 2.1 innings, giving up eight hits and seven runs, four earned, while striking out four in the loss.

The Gamecocks take on No. 9 Oklahoma Saturday morning at 9 a.m. PST to start day two of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic at Eller Media Stadium. They close out the day at 5:30 p.m. facing Oregon at Stephanie Lynn Craig Park in Henderson, Nev.
