CLEMSON, S.C. – Three throwers on the South Carolina men’s track team set new personal bests Friday in the first day of competition at the Tiger Classic. Members of the USC men’s and women’s track programs are competing in the two-day invitational that concludes Saturday.
Carolina’s trio of Jason Cook, David Zaycek and Michael Zajac all set personal bests in the shot put Friday led by Jason Cook’s 58-0 ½ distance to win the event. Zaycek came in second at a distance of 53-5 ¾. Zajac also placed in the top five with a throw of 49-3 ¾.
Two women’s pole vaulters set season bests after Carolina’s trio of Sallie Gurganus, Vica Shobe and Liza Todd finished 1-2-3 in the event. Gurganus took home the championship at 12-5 ½ with Shobe and Todd both clearing 11-11 ¾. The marks were season bests for Gurganus and Shobe. It is the second time this season the three finished first, second and third – the last time occurring at the UNC Classic on January 19.
Nick Lytle qualified for the finals in the men’s 60-meter dash after placing ninth at 6.99 in the prelims.
Aimee Kodat threw 41-10 ¾ in the women’s shot put to place sixth in the prelims and seventh in the finals. The mark is a career-high for the redshirt freshman.
