COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina’s women’s tennis team lost its first match of the season Saturday, falling 7-0 to Clemson at Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center in Columbia, S.C. The Gamecocks are now 6-1 while the Tigers improved to 4-6 and snapped a six-match losing streak.
The doubles point did not go Carolina’s way, as the Tigers swept all three positions. At two, Clemson’s Estefania Balda and Federica van Adrichem topped Miljana Jocic and Natasa Vuckovic 8-3. Ina Hadziselimovic and Alexandra Luc followed with an 8-5 victory against Suzanna Mansour and Megan McGavock on court three. The final match at one doubles saw 12th-ranked Ani Mijacika and Carol Salge defeat No. 17 Gira Schofield and Ana Marija Zubori 8-6.
Clemson continued to roll in the first three singles contests it won. Luc finishes first at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Jelena Rajic. Mijacika, the nation’s No. 1 player, posted a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over No. 35 Schofield at one singles, and Salge clinched the match by downing Jocic 6-4, 6-3 on court six.
While the final three matches all went three sets, Carolina failed to win any of them. Mansour fell 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to Hadziselimovic at the No. 4 spot, followed by Vuckovic losing to van Adrichem 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 at three singles. Zubori and Balda finished last at No. 2 singles, a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory for Balda.
South Carolina returns to action Friday when it hosts Kentucky at 2 p.m. On March 2, Vanderbilt will travel to Columbia for a noon contest. Both matches will be played at Maxcy Gregg.
