ATHENS, Ga. — The South Carolina women’s tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback to No. 3 Georgia on Friday in Athens, Ga. The Gamecocks fell to 7-3 and 1-2 in the SEC while the Bulldogs improved to 10-1 and 3-0 in the league.
Georgia’s sister duo of Kelley and Yvette Hyndman helped the Bulldogs win the doubles point with an 8-2 victory against Gira Schofield and Ana Marija Zubori at the top position. Before they finished, Cameron Ellis and Adrienne Elsberry upended Suzanna Mansour and Megan McGavock 8-2 for UGA’s first victory. The Gamecocks had set points in a tiebreaker on court two, but Monika Dancevic and Naoko Ueshima still managed to beat Miljana Jocic and Natasa Vuckovic 8-7(7).
Georgia moved ahead 2-0 with Dancevic’s 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Mansour at No. 4 singles and Yvette Hyndman won 6-2, 6-1 against Zubori at two singles to make the score 3-0. Ellis provided the clinching point after winning the first set 6-2 over Jocic on court five and then Jocic retiring in the third game of the second set with an injury.
Ueshima added to the Bulldogs’ point total with a 6-3, 7-5 decision in her match with Vuckovic at the No. 3 spot. McGavock lost in three sets to Elsberry at six singles 4-6, 6-3, (10-2) and Kelley Hyndman completed the sweep with a 5-7, 6-3, (10-6) win over Schofield at the top position.
The Gamecocks will look to rebound at No. 17 Tennessee on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Lady Volunteers also lost 7-0 Friday against No. 5 Florida.
