Complete Decathlon Results in PDF Format
CONWAY, S.C. – South Carolina junior Curt McGill leads the field after opening day action in the men’s decathlon at the Shamrock Invitational. The decathlon was the only men’s event held Thursday at the Coastal Carolina Track and Field facility in Conway, S.C., as South Carolina opens its 2008 outdoor season.
McGill (Spartanburg, S.C.) is in first with 3,722 points after five events with sophomore Scott Pierce (Columbia, S.C.) in fourth place with 3,426 events. McGill jumped a personal best 23-3 ¼ to take first in the long jump (835 points) and also recorded a win in the shot put with a throw of 46-1 ½ for 732 points. He took sixth in the 100-meter dash at 11.54 (744 points), second in the high jump at 6-2 ¾ (714 points) and tied for eight in the 400-meter dash at 52.65 for 697 points to complete the first half of competition.
Pierce enters Friday’s final round with 3,426 points. His best showing of the day came in the 400-meter dash where he earned 795 points for a second place finish at 50.42. Pierce tied for third in the high jump with a clearance of 6-1 ½ for 687 points and took fourth in the long jump at 21-4 for 697 points. He placed eighth in the 100-meter dash at 11.62 (728 points) and tied for ninth in the shot put at a distance of 34-7 ¾ (519 points).
Decathlon competition kicks off Friday at 10 a.m. with the 110-meter hurdles. Other events in the decathlon include the discus throw, pole vault, javelin and 1500-meter run. The rest of the Carolina men’s and women’s team will begin competition with the hammer throw at 12 noon and track events beginning at 3 p.m.
