BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. – The defending national champion South Carolina equestrian team has learned that the Western and Hunter Seat teams have been invited to compete at the 2008 Varsity Equestrian National Championships.

The Hunter Seat team (9-4) earns a first round bye after it was awarded a No. 4 ranking in the 12-team field. They will face the winner of the No. 5 Auburn/No. 12 Stephen F. Austin competition. The Western team (8-5) carries a No. 6 ranking and will compete against No. 11 Stephen F. Austin in the first round of competition.

In addition to the team competition, Gamecock senior Kristen Terebesi has qualified for the individual championships in equitation and equitation over fences. Terebesi earned a No. 2 national ranking in equitation over fences with an 11-2 record this year and six MVPs as well as a No. 3 ranking in equitation on the flat with an 8-4 record and four MVPs. As a rider ranked in the top four in both disciplines, she will compete in head-to-head competition for the individual national championship in both disciplines, marking the first year that individual champions will be crowned.

The Varsity Equestrian National Championships will be held April 17-19 at the Heart of Fair Texas Complex in Waco, Texas. South Carolina won the national championship in 2007 and 2005 and has won three consecutive Hunter Seat national championships.
