Pat Ferguson also added a base hit but Gamecock left fielder DeAngelo Mack hosed down Cartwright at home on the play to keep Carolina within a run. South Carolina looked to mount a rally in the ninth inning against NC State reliever Eryk McConnell but a pair of defensive web gems kept the Gamecocks from scoring the tying run. Scott Wingo drove a deep ball down the right field line that saw Domonique Rodgers lay out and nab a possible double with a diving catch. The game then ended on a diving stop by second baseman Dallas Poulk on a line drive off the bat of Reese Havens.

Whit Merrifield singled with one out followed by a base hit from Justin Smoak that gave the Gamecocks runners on first and third base. Shunick, however, battled and struck out both James Darnell and Phil Disher to keep the Gamecocks off the scoreboard.

Poulk struck for the Wolfpack early as he drove in a pair of runs in his first two plate appearances to stake NC State to a 2-0 lead. Poulk led off the bottom half of the first with a solo home run as he launched a 0-2 pitch from South Carolina starter Nick Godwin over the right field wall. The second run for NC State came in the third inning and would be unearned as the Pack took advantage of a Gamecock error by shortstop Reese Havens. Tommy Foschi reached base to lead off the frame on a fielding error and would then steal second base and advanced to third on a ground out to the right side. He scored on Poulk’s RBI single up the middle.
