COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina volleyball program, in partnership with Richland County, is raising awareness about the environment and how people impact it by the way they live. The team and staff took the first step in August when they requested their media guide be printed on post-consumer content, and they continue their actions with a “Go Green” match on Sun., Sept. 21, against Georgia.

The staff made recommendations regarding their media guide specifications this year, asking for a “green” guide. Chorus Art paper was chosen for the guide. Made with 50 percent recycled fiber, of which 25 percent is post-consumer waste, the paper is produced using elemental chlorine-free pulp and is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The council works to conserve biological diversity and old-growth forests, protect the well being of indigenous groups and slow global climate change. The Chorus Art paper came from FSC-Certifed forests, which tracks the product from forest through the end of production, ensuring the customer that their purchase was made following the most sustainable practices available today. Service Printing won the bid and printed the entire run on the special paper, which many people cannot tell is any different than what was produced previously.

Sunday’s contest continues the campaign to increase recognition about the importance of living an eco-friendly life. All fans are encouraged to bring their recyclable products to this match, with the first 300 bringing recyclables receiving a free reusable grocery bag courtesy of South Carolina Athletics.

South Carolina Volleyball got involved in this effort to encourage fans to do all they can to preserve the health and aesthetics of our world for future generations. Both the coaching staff and the team feel that people today should not be concerned about how the world around us looks, but rather about what it is actually like to live in it.

“The most important thing in being eco-friendly,” assistant coach Damian Elder stated, “is to have the willpower to make small change. Being disciplined about small change will bring about global change.”

Admission to matches at the Volleyball Competition Facility is $5 for adults and $3 for anyone 18 and under. The Family Plan, which includes admission for two kids and two adults, costs just $12. All home contests are played at the facility on the corner of Blossom and Assembly Streets across from the Strom Thurmond Health & Wellness Center.
