COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina posted 10 victories and earned six provisional times Saturday as the team concluded competition at the Gamecock Indoor Invitational held at the USC Indoor Fieldhouse.

Johnathan Hancock provided the highlight of the day for the Gamecocks as he won the 55m dash at a provisional time of 6.24, setting the USC Indoor Facility record in the process. Hancock’s run bests the seven-year old record of 6.26 run by former Gamecock Corey Taylor. The time stands fourth all-time in South Carolina’s indoor record book.

Other provisional times include Lakya Brookins’s seventh provisional time of the year with a win in the short sprint a 6.76, Shayla Mahan in the 55m dash (6.83), Ronnetta Alexander in the 55m hurdles (7.75), Michael Zajac in the weight throw (20.72m//67-11.75) and Jason Cook in the shot put (18.53m//60-09.50).

In addition to the provisional qualifiers, South Carolina found wins from other athletes in the daylong event. Booker Nunley steadily improved in the 55m hurdles and finished with a win at 7.39. The men’s 4x400m relay team bested the field by six seconds to claim the win at 3:39.86. Marvin Reitze came close to his first provisional mark of the season with a clearance of 5.10m (16-08.75) in the pole vault. Keith Romero rounded out the men’s winners as he won the men’s 400m dash at 54.14.

For the women, Kayla Blake and Cory Bowen provided a 1-2 punch in the high jump as Blake won the event at 1.65m (5-05) and Bowen came in second at 1.6m (5-03). The Gamecock pole vaulters claimed spots 1-2-3-4-6-7-8 on the women’s side with Sallie Gurganus and Liza Todd grabbing the first two spots with clearances of 3.93m (12-10.75m), a mark that would have qualified outdoors. Vica Shobe and Allison Nicosia claimed the next two spots for Carolina. Competing as an unattached athlete, Stacee Roberts took the women’s shot put at 13.71m (44-11.75m) and Aimee Kodat followed at 12.88m (42-03.25). Janica Austin was another Gamecock that came close to notching a win with a second place finish in the 55m hurdles.

South Carolina hits the road next weekend when the team competes at the SEC Indoor Championships. The championships will be held at the Nutter Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Kentucky.
